Global Citizenship Education: Theoretical Approaches and Practical Developments

Within the framework of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, approved by the United Nations in 2015, Global Citizenship Education (GCED) plays a prominent role in strategies aimed at achieving a clearly engaged citizenry with a critical and active perspective in the face of the many serious problems we face as a global community. The different perspectives and considerations in the various chapters of this book, focusing both on theoretical reflection on GCED and practical implementation experiences, undoubtedly enrich the final result. With all the authors, we ultimately aim to address the central objective of the work: to promote, as advocated by the United Nations Educational and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), critical reflection and debate around an educational paradigm that seeks to prepare people not only to be competent and committed in their local environments, but also to become informed, democratic, responsible, and active citizens on the global stage. Without forgetting, of course, the central role that teachers can play in achieving this.
