Towards inclusion in higher education: an intercultural, gender and human rights approach
In a global context characterized by cultural diversity, human mobility, and persistent social inequalities, higher education institutions face the ethical and pedagogical imperative of transforming themselves into genuinely inclusive spaces. This challenge takes on strategic relevance when we consider, as the European Commission (2022) points out, that universities constitute central hubs of research, education, and innovation, playing an irreplaceable role in building democratic, resilient, and interculturally cohesive societies. From a comprehensive perspective, this effort must be articulated through three interdependent approaches: gender and intersectionality, interculturality, and human rights. This chapter analyzes these approaches from two dimensions: theoretical (establishing their conceptual relevance and pertinence) and practical (proposing guidelines to overcome current curricular and training limitations). Specifically, it offers recommendations for integrating cross-cutting knowledge that is currently insufficient in European university programs.
